Legacy Artists: Ursula Walker and Buddy Budson

URSULA WALKER/BUDDY BUDSON SEXTET

The Ursula Walker/Buddy Budson Sextet performs standards and jazz classics, with an emphasis on well-known jazz instrumentals with lyrics by Ursula and Buddy.

Ursula Walker has been a mainstay of the Detroit music world for 69 years, beginning at the age of eleven on Detroit television and radio. Her outstanding talents as a unique stylist of ballads, standards, and jazz gained her national recognition among her peers. Ursula fielded many offers to tour nationally – with artists such as Count Basie and Tony Bennett. Over the years she has performed at countless clubs, concerts, and festivals, frequently at the Detroit Jazz Festival. She has opened for many well-known performers, including Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, and Tania Maria. Ursula has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the 2007 Southern Christian Leadership Conference Aretha Franklin Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Performing Arts.

Buddy Budson has been playing jazz piano around Detroit for 60 years. He toured and recorded with Buddy Rich, Earl Klugh, and the Four Tops. He has backed well-known artists including Henry Mancini, Mel Torme, and Sammy Davis, Jr. When the Fox Television Network debuted in the late 1980’s Buddy composed and arranged the theme and transitional music for the sitcom, Duet, which featured Ursula on the vocals. He has also done vocal and instrumental arrangements for big band and orchestra.

The sextet features four of the area’s finest musicians. Bassist Jeff Halsey is Professor of Jazz Performance at Bowling Green State in Ohio where he teaches jazz history and improvisation, and jazz bass. He has toured internationally with such luminaries as Tommy Flanagan, Dizzy Gillespie, and Arturo Sandoval. Drummer David Taylor teaches jazz percussion at Wayne State in Detroit and is one of the most sought-after drummers on the jazz scene, has been on countless recordings, and has taught at Interlochen National Music Camp. Trumpeter Dwight Adams is one of the brightest stars on the Detroit jazz scene. He has performed and recorded with many well-known jazz artists and has toured with Stevie Wonder for over twenty years. Saxophonist Keith Kaminski is in great demand in the Detroit area, as evidenced by his prolific recording with artists including Alberta Adams, Bettye LaVette, and Bob Seger, with whom he has been touring for a number of years.
