Robert Hurst has performed on over 200 diverse and critically acclaimed recordings. A select group of these productions has garnered him seven GRAMMY® Awards and several RIAA ® certified Multi-Platinum and Gold recordings, whilst his own eight recordings as a Bandleader have all generated Top Ten and Five Star recognition around the Globe. You may also recognize Robert as the inaugural bassist in the House Band of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno for eight seasons, from 1992 to 1999. His work in performing, directing, acting, arranging, and composing on the NBC program was highlighted with four EMMY® Awards in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1999. Hurst has also penned original music scores for several films including The Wood and Brown Sugar. Hurst can be heard in over 30 major motion pictures, and has featured solos and performances on BlockBuster soundtracks including Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen and Good Night, and Good Luck.
In his composition, JUST US 4 ALL, the final movement in the Festival’s featured JUSTICE! Suite, Hurst features pianist Ian Finkelstein, drummer Nate Winn, percussionist Pepe Espinosa, saxophonist Rafael Statin, trumpeter Dwight Adams, and vocalists Jillian Hurst, Brendan Asante, Isis Damil, and Monica Blaire. This piece has a triumphant tone, and calls for a collective fight for a more perfect world that includes, supports, celebrates, and is just for us all. This composition is designed not only to compliment the other movements in the suite, but to serve as an extension of Hurst’s belief system. As a musician, parent, partner, and educator, Robert has a profound commitment to amplifying the underrepresented and advocating for diversity. JUST US 4 ALL highlights the empathy, growth, and beauty that arises from intercultural exchange, and explores just how strong we can be if we make structural changes that will allow the whole of our society to thrive.
