The Legacy Series 2017: Celebrating the Artistry and Mentorship of George “Sax” Benson

Each year the Detroit Jazz Festival selects a significant artist from Detroit’s rich jazz history as a magnate for all of us to discover or revisit, celebrate and emulate. The idea is to draw new inspiration from those that have come before us and built the foundations of the Detroit-Sound.

In addition to being Detroit’s go-to jazz saxophone soloist, George “Sax” Benson has taught generations of jazz artists from his home studio, Wayne State University and the Detroit Wayne Music Studio (now part of the Detroit Saxophone Center). The Legacy Series: Celebrating the Artistry and Mentorship of George “Sax” Benson at the Detroit Jazz Festival seeks to feature artists who have been influenced by George’s legacy, either as a student, bandmate or through his recorded legacy.

This Series offers professional artists at any stage in their career the opportunity to receive an honorarium ($800-$3,000) and a performance slot at the 2017 Detroit Jazz Festival.
