Jaribu Shahid : bass violin, bass guitar, bass ukelele Born in Detroit, Jaribu was raised in a diverse musical community in multiple genres including work with Kamau Kenyatta, Kenn Cox, Wendell Harrison, J.C. Heard, Jimmy Wilkins Big Band, Ed Nuccelli Plural Circle, DSO Civic Orchestra, and others. Highlights of these years include working and recording with Griot Galaxy ,Geri Allen and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. A life-altering experience in 1978 was living, recording and touring with Sun Ra. Through a series of concerts produced by the Creative Arts Collective (featuring Anthony Braxton, Anthony Davis, Leroy Jenkins, Muhal Richard Abrams, George Lewis, and others), I met Roscoe Mitchell in 1979 and began an association continuing to this day. A member of his Sound Ensemble, Note Factory as well as a guest with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Credits include the touring and recording with the James Carter Quartet as well as groups and projects led by David Murray. Other credits include Milt Jackson (DVD from a concert performance in Munich), Leon Thomas, Terry Collier, Hamiett Blueitt, James Newton, Tony Allen and many others. He is also honored with the 2022 Kresge Fellowship Award. I have assembled a sextet of sufficiently eclectic musicians to present a celebration of the music and impact of the AACM (the Association of the Advancement of Creative Musicians) whose contribution to the exploration of music cannot be overstated. Please join me and my friends in a heart-felt tribute to many of the most influential exponents and developers of the music often referred as Avant-garde. Personnel: Jaribu Shahid – bass; Tony Holland and Steve Grady – saxophones; Allen Dennard – trumpet; Michael Malis – piano; Jonathan Barahal Taylor – drums
