J.C. Heard JazzWeek at WayneThe Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation, in partnership with the Wayne State University Department of Music and the J.C. Heard family, created the J.C. Heard JazzWeek@Wayne, a one-week workshop that provides high school students with an intensive and rewarding jazz education experience.

Through competitive audition, 40 high school students are selected each year to participate in the program. As an added benefit, thanks to the support of all three sponsoring parties, no students are burdened with a tuition fee. This design assures the diversity of participants and rewards young jazz artists that have achieved a superior level of ability. The program has enjoyed 100 percent attendance every year, a significant number of returning students and a reputation for excellence throughout the Southeast Michigan area.  All J.C. Heard JazzWeek@Wayne students are invited to open the Festival as Dr. Valade’s Brass Band, led by New Orleans luminary, Shannon Powell.

Beyond the workshop, many participating students are extended the opportunity to take part in a J.C. Heard All-Star Youth Ensemble performance at the Detroit Jazz Festival, the world’s largest free jazz festival.
