February Events: Jam Session, Straight Ahead Reunion & More

The 39th Annual Detroit Jazz Festival is six months away, but the fun is just beginning.

This month we’re kicking-off our monthly Jam Session at the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe, reuniting the beloved original members of Detroit’s own Straight Ahead for four sold-out shows, and announcing who our next Artist in Residence will be.

See below for event details.

2/19: Jam Session & Artist Festival Submissions

Detroit All-Star house bands open the bandstand for musicians of all ages to sit-in and share jazz in the time-honored jam session tradition. Detroit Jazz Festival Artistic Director Chris Collins will be checking out the artists and Jazz Fest staff will be on hand to accept submissions from artists/ensembles to be considered for the 2018 Detroit Jazz Festival.

Monday’s performers include Chris Collins, Dwight Adams, Ian Finkelstein, Jeff Pedraz and Straight Ahead’s Gayelynn McKinney.

From 10 a.m. to 1 pm, Chuck Newsome, Educational Coordinator of the Jazz Infusion Program and Willi McAllister, Director of Fine Arts for DPSCD, will lead students in a performance-based convocation of talent and ideas between the schools. This event is for students, in a highly professional and unique jazz venue, in their own backyard.
